What a grand final. What a season!
We’ve had our first season with the new positions and it has been an absolute cracker. One of the most exciting ends of the regular season with such a tight battle for finals spots echoing a stunning AFL season.
The GF was the one we needed to see. The 2 best teams this season had their finals rematch, their 4th encounter of the season to finally settle the discussion
Buddha’s Brewsers recruited well at the PSD (despite some detractors) yet still struggled early. However after some nifty MSD trading and some Tough Love inspired new motivation and diligence, they brought their team to the precipice of glory. Peaking right at the business end of the season they stormed into the finals in stunning, consistently brilliant form. They missed out on GF day probably due to a slight lack of depth and a lack of finals experience with a couple of players not handling the pressure of the big stage.
The Dark Side were the powerhouse of the regular season – a full 2 games clear of 2nd place – despite the effective loss of their elite long term star Roo to injury and age related demise. However at the business end of the season form drops from the Doc and Ebert left them to watch the Brewsers cruise on past coming into the finals, capped by the Dark Side’s annihilation in the Major Semi.
The Emperor’s tirade fuelled them into action in the Prelim and on the GF while Doc embarrassed himself, Ebert lead the line to glory.
Their depth was a major contributor to their success, with effective coverage for their injuries and 2 elites sitting on the bench on GF day, one who subbed in to help seal the win.
Dark Side have set a couple HFFL records today:
– the 2nd team to go back to back since the Twaddstars of 2007
– have now won the most premierships in HFFL history, their 5th surpassing the mighty Twaddstars on 4.
For the Brewsers, I feel a sleeping giant has now awoken as a new found attentiveness and cunning focus may result in a successful franchise. Congratulations on an outstanding season and effort.
The Lotto series was also exciting with Rhubarbs fighting through the finals to earn equal highest balls in a stunning draw with the Pots. The draw will occur live on September 16th.
Special mention to the Real Saints who had a Points For almost equal to the Brewsers with some mammoth game score along the way but just lacked the consistency to get to the final day.
Mick and Buddha prize money to follow.
We’ll have some post season discussions in the following days as we release the stats including elites and top 20’s and review the new positions.
