Summary of HFFL 2024 Drafting, Positions & Scoring

Drafting

Coaches coaches select a squad of 19 players at the PSD.

They then can freely draft 2 more players from the remaining available players anytime starting 3hrs post the end of the PSD and ending as indicated in the 2024 Key Dates & Deadlines post.
This will give a total squad size of 21 (1 less than last year and 2 less than years prior).

Then after the MSD, this squad size will be increased by 2 to 23.

Positions

Each week coaches name 10 starting players on field and 4 bench players

The starting field players are:
– 2 Forwards
– 1 Half Forward
– 1 Marker
– 1 Extractor (specialised midfielder)
– 2 Midfielders (accumulators)
– 1 Tackler (specialised midfielder)
– 1 Half-Back
– 1 Utility

2022 MSD, Trade Periods and Deadlines

Below are the MSD, trade and delisting details:

  • Trade Period Opens: Tuesday 10th May 6pm AWST
  • Injury Condition deadline: Sunday 15th May 11pm AWST (explained in this post)
  • Delistings & Trade Deadline: Monday 16th May 4pm AWST
  • Release of MSD Draft order: likely Sunday 15th evening some time
  • 2022 MSD: Monday May 16th at 7:30pm AWST
  • Post MSD Trade Period Opens: as soon as the MSD ends
  • Post MSD Trade Period Ends: at the start of AFL Round 12

Note

  • Due to the MSD being on a Monday, the pre-MSD trade period starts early.
  • Unless otherwise specified, all trades made before the Injury Condition deadline are conditional trades – subject to the Standard Injury Condition
  • Trades should be made in good faith and be “approximate fair value” based on value in the current season.
    • The value of players who may be retained in future seasons is not taken into account in this assessment e.g. if coaches trade a young average player (who may become a great player in the future) for an established great player in a straight swap, that would be deemed to be not approximate fair value.
    • There is wide allowance given in the determination of approximate fair value. However trades that are clearly one-sided that appear to unreasonably advantage one team or make one team uncompetitive may be declared as “nefarious trades” and disallowed by the Administrator.

Delisting Process

Go to our HFFL 2022 Drafting Googlesheet

Click on column G to select it (Player Picked)

Perform Find function (Apple +F or Ctrl+F) and type the name of player you want to delist to locate them.

Then cut their name from their cell and paste it 2 cells over into the Delisted column (Column I). This will show they have been delisted and by them being removed from the Player Picked column it will return them to the list of available players for drafting

Then also go to thebench and go to “Squad” and click the bin icon next to your player. Don’t forget to do this for the extra dummy player (Dummy FDP picks) we drafted at the PSD to fill out our squads. Also don’t delist on the bench until AFL R9 has actually finished or your squad won’t be full and you might not be able to name a team for R9.

Both the above steps need to be taken for your delisting to officially count.

Trading Process

  • Post your trade here
  • Announce your trade on the HFFL Banter group
  • After making the trade, for players who have left your squad (Outward Trades), follow the instructions above in the Delisting Process except cut and paste the player leaving your club to the “Outwards Trade” column instead of the “Delisted” column. The Administrator will later add them into your squad as an “Inward trade”.
  • Then submit the trade on the bench and the Administrator will approve it.

2022 MSD Official Trades

4 Steps to Complete Trades

  • 1) Post your MSD Trades here – below
  • 2) Then announce your trade on the HFFL Banter group
  • 3) Then for players who have left your squad (Outward Trades), follow the instructions in this post under “Delisting Process” except cut and paste the player leaving your club to the “Outwards Trade” column instead of the “Delisted” column. The Administrator will later add them into your squad as an “Inward trade”.
  • 4) Then submit the trade on the bench and the Administrator will approve it.

HFFL Retentions & Compensation Picks 2020

The Retention deadline will be Friday 28th February at 2200 AWST.
Due to the earlier PSD, the need to have the Pre-PSD Draft Pick draft and admin processing the Retentions Deadline is required to be relatively early this year. In addition the PSD itself is relatively early.

Injury AllowancesAs a result I’ve decided to provide some allowance for injuries this year as follows:

– if you retain a player and they receive a significant injury up to 5pm on PSD night, you can choose to delist them and be awarded the relevant compensation pick instead.

– if you draft a player at the PSD and they receive a significant injury up to the beginning of Round 1, you can choose to delist them and draft an undrafted player.

Posting RetentionsThis year Retentions will only need to be posted in one place, the google drafting sheet – HFFL 2020 drafts. They do not need posting on the hfflonline.com website.
The google sheet
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Hbae2bV0HXxwZ4eHdHtUXyVoEob_DcT3bUC29KPjAUM/edit#gid=0
You’ve all been invited to this sheet. Heath and Twadds I used both your emails including your gmail ones.
After the retentions deadline has passed, you should then draft them to your team on the bench.
I strongly advise all coaches to submit their retentions now as you can always change them later up until the deadline.

Compensation Picks

This is the first season we have introduced compensation picks – if you choose not to retain a player in any of the specified ranking categories that you are allowed to retain, you receive a compensation draft pick instead. The compo picks have been designed to be very fair so as general rules:

  1. If you have a player you predict will finish this season near the top end of their current stats ranking group (or above it) —> RETAIN THEM
    1. E.g. you have a player who is an 11-20 ranked player, finished 17th but they are young and improving and you expect them to finish higher like 11th/12th or maybe even in the next higher category (Elite) then you should retain them.
  2. If you have a player who does to fit the above criteria —> DELIST them
    1. E.g. you have a player who finished 17th in the 11-20 group and you don’t expect any improvement —> delist

The only exception is that there are 2 mandatory sub-30 retentions so you must choose your best 2 sub-30 players and retain them regardless of whether they are good/promising or not. This was made part of the retentions rules to minimise the length of the draft in the new compo pick system.

The template for the draft/compo picks, with an example of retentions for each team (in blue at the bottom) and the resultant compensation picks in the green rows above, are shown here
http://hfflonline.com/spreadsheet-for-retentions-compo-picks-from-2020/

HFFL Pre-PSD Draft Order

  1. Roofa’s Squadron
  2. Lyle’s team
  3. Mayblooms
  4. Rhubabarians
  5. Twaddstars
  6. Real Saints
  7. Karl’s Krushers
  8. Dark Side
  9. Mustard Pots
  10. Rapid Sossage

This determines the order in which coaches can select their 1st round draft pick (the pick not the player) and all their resultant draft picks are created automatically.
