This post is to clarify the system we adopted this year (2016) for the new finals system that will occur for the bottom 5 teams in Rounds 19-22.
Rationale:
- Once it was confirmed before the season started that we would no longer would have relegations, the lottery ball finals series (LBFS) was introduced as an administrative decision pre-season and communicated to all coaches. Coaches were all asked if they had alternative ideas and none were put forward by anyone so we proceeded with the LBFS.
- The LBFS maintains interest amongst all coaches during the finals when it usually wanes and prevents tanking or perceptions of tanking
How the LBFS works:
- The finals series is conducted for teams ranked 6th-10th at the end of the regular season
- It is conducted as a mirror image of the real HFFL Finals Series. ie the 10th place team operates like the 1st place team and has the first week off, the 8th and 9th placed teams play in the Qualifying FinalĀ and the 7th and 6th play in the Elimination Final. Subsequent rounds continue as a mirror image of the real finals series
- The prize in the LBFS are lottery balls in a draw to determine the first 5 picks of the next PSD. The lottery balls are allocated in terms of finishing position in the LBFS so the winner gets 5 balls, runner up gets 4 balls and so on such that the last placed finish gets only 1 ball. So the more balls you have the better your chance of being drawn out of a hat to receive a higher pick in the PSD.
