HGA System Changed

Following this recent post reminding coaches of the HGA process and bench quirks

HGA: Rule, Bench Naming & Penalties Clarified

There has been some unrest amongst the natives about the difficulties inherent in this system. This is not lost on Logistix.

Consequently Logistix has bowed to pressure and will implement the following:

  • The HGA player position will no longer be used
  • Instead Logistix will add 5 points to each home team at the end of every round

Please remove HGA from all your R3 teams (HFFL R2) immediately.

Please note I cannot remove the HGA position until next season so it will just sit there blank for the rest of the season.

HGA: Rule, Bench Naming & Penalties Clarified

Recall that the home team each week needs to claim HGA by naming a player in the HGA position. If you do so you earn 5 points HGA.

A few points to note:

  • It appears if you don’t name a player there before the round starts, you can’t change this, even during the rolling lockout
  • If you inappropriately name a player there (when you are the away team) before the round starts, you can’t remove him, even during the rolling lock out period
  • Your players stay in the same positions each week unless you change them so if you had HGA last week and you are away this week, you actually need to remove the HGA player before the round starts.
  • The player you name there may actually have to play in the real AFL. Otherwise from memory the bench I think deems him as ineligible and doesn’t award any points to the position. This is a recollection from memory only. In any case try and name a person who is likely to play. However if you can’t cause your only available chaps are in your actual side, then just name anyone there. If you aren’t awarded your 5 points, inform Logistix for a post game edit.

Penalties for incorrect HGA naming:

  • If you forget to claim your HGA. You do not receive it. ie you forgo the 5 points you would have earned
  • If you claim HGA incorrectly, you will be docked 10 points. ie you will lose the 5 HGA points you earned incorrectly plus an additional 5 point penalty.

The penalties are in force to encourage accurate naming and to reduce unnecessary work for Logistix.  However to adjust again to the above fine points of HGA and the bench inconsistent partial lockout behaviour, leniency will be provided in R1 so no penalties will be applied. Logistix will make the changes for you post game, as requested, “for free” for R1 only.

Penalties will be applied from R2.

2017 New Positions & Starting Lineup Clarified

Reminder to coaches that we will have the following starting lineup this season

Forward, Forward

Half-Forward

Marker

Midfielder, Extractor, Midfielder

Tackler

Half-Back

Utility (new)

= 10 starting players.

That’s 3 new positions and 1 position that has changed – The utility (Hit outs added)

We will also have an expanded bench – likely 3 or 4 players, TBC at the PSD vote.

The scoring for the new positions are as follows:

Half-Back:  R50 x 3  + I50 x 1 – FA x 2
Half-Forward:  I50 x 3 + Goals x 2 + Marks x 1 – FA x 2
Extractor:  Disposals/2 + Cl x 3 – FA x 2
Utility: (Disposals + Marks x 4 + Tackles x 5 + Goals x 6 + Behinds + Hit Outs)/2 – FA x 2
[[R50 = Rebounds from defensive 50, I50 = Disposals into the attacking 50, Cl = Clearances, HO]

Retentions allowed for PSD 2017

6 standard players with the following restrictions:

1. Only 1 can be elite

2. A maximum of 3 top 20 players (including the Elite)

A 7th player can be retained as a Rookie

  • This player must have played 22 career games or less
  • This player may be Elite or Non-Elite

So the best combination of players you can usually retain is:

  1. 1. Elite
  2. 2. 2x 11-20 players
  3. 3. 3 x Sub-20 player
  4. 4. 1 x Rookie

Clarifying Current Allowed PSD Retentions

The current allowed retentions are

A 5th player can be retained as a Rookie

  • This player must have played 22 career games or less
  • This player may be Elite or Non-Elite

So the best combination of players you can usually retain is:

  2. 2. 2x 11-20 players
  3. 3. 1 x Sub-20 player
  4. 4. 1 x Rookie

Administrator Warning Re 3 New Positions

It is a momentous occasion that we have as a group taken our largest step forward in HFFL history in expanding and changing the game as we know it through the introduction of 3 new positions.

However this is not without risk. Despite best efforts in research and analysis the ability to recruit for and play these positions may be harder then expected and the results may be different than expected. The scores may be too low or too high and there may unexpectedly excessive standard deviation and problematic outliers.

Therefore please firmly expect that next season after we’ve given these positions a go there may be moves to make amendments to positions or remove them all together (for 2018). e.g.

  • if the half-back score is too low we may increase it
  • if the half-back score has too much standard deviation and lacks depth of players we might get rid of it
  • if the half-forward is too lopsided with a huge “Danger” outlier and there are troubles recruiting for the position we might rejig the calculation to make it a smaller score or remove the position all together.

Obviously any changes must be by majority vote but with such a big change now, please do expect that changes later may occur.

So PRICE THIS RISK IN when you make you retention and recruiting decisions. ie if you recruit Dangerfield and then we end up getting rid of the Half-forward, don’t complain … you have been warned!

With that warning out of the way – enjoy the brave new world of the HFFL. It will be a cracker! I’m excited!

Warm Regards,

Logistix
